Before and after photo shows woman with even skin tone after addressing unwanted rednessFacial redness is a common cosmetic concern for people in and around Chicago. While redness can sometimes be managed with skincare products, persistent discoloration often requires advanced treatments for long-term improvement. The Art of Plastic Surgery’s med-spa combines artistic vision with technical expertise. We offer ClearScan and broad band light (BBL) therapy. Both leading technologies are designed to reduce vascular redness and restore a more even skin tone.

Common Causes of Facial Redness

Facial redness can occur for several reasons, and identifying the cause is key to choosing the right treatment:

  • Rosacea – A chronic skin condition that leads to flushing, visible blood vessels, and sensitivity.
  • Sun Damage – Prolonged UV exposure can weaken blood vessels and create lasting redness.
  • Broken Capillaries – Small, visible veins appear when blood vessels become dilated or damaged.
  • Skin Sensitivity – Certain skincare products or environmental factors can cause inflammation and redness.
  • Medical Conditions – Issues like lupus or eczema can also contribute to persistent facial redness.

If redness remains despite lifestyle changes and topical treatments, laser and light-based therapies can offer lasting improvements.

How ClearScan and BroadBand Light (BBL) Reduce Redness

At our medspa in Chicago, ClearScan and BBL therapy are two of the most effective treatments for facial redness. Both technologies work by targeting unwanted blood vessels while stimulating collagen production for overall skin health.

  • ClearScan: This laser treatment uses a 1064 nm wavelength to precisely target your blood vessels. This minimizes redness while protecting your surrounding skin. It is especially effective for rosacea and broken capillaries, offering controlled energy delivery with minimal discomfort.
  • BroadBand Light (BBL): BBL therapy is a powerful IPL-based treatment that reduces redness while improving overall skin tone and texture. The light energy penetrates deep into the skin, breaking down visible blood vessels and stimulating collagen remodeling for long-term results.

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

Our med-spa is led by Dr. Gregory Wiener and Vanessa Doyle, RN, two of the most popular aesthetic specialists in Chicago. Both ClearScan and BBL offer non-invasive solutions for facial redness, but the best option depends on your skin type and severity of redness. Some patients may benefit from combining both treatments to achieve optimal results.

If persistent facial redness affects your confidence, schedule a consultation. Call 773-763-3990 to book your appointment and take the first step toward clearer, healthier skin.

Nobody wants to look washed out— especially if you are going out for the night or headed to a big event. But if you have noticed that your cheeks are a bit rosier than normal without you having to add blush, you may be suffering from a skin condition called “rosacea.” So, what is rosacea and how can you tell if you have it? From persistent redness to frequent blushing, this article will list three signs that you may have rosacea. Read on to learn more.

Persistent Redness

As an adult, you know what is normal for your skin and what is abnormal. You know that if you spend a long day outside, you are likely to have red skin and that if you run a few miles or exercise, your skin is more flushed than usual. However, if you have started to notice that your skin— especially around your nose and cheeks— are redder than usual without any of these contributors, then you may have rosacea.

Pimples

If you have acne, then it may be hard for you to distinguish between acne and rosacea. When you have rosacea, you can expect to have small, pus-filled pimples across your face that typically burn. Additionally, rosacea induced pimples typically don’t have blackheads like normal acne.

Frequent Blushing

Do you blush and become flushed when you get embarrassed, nervous, or hot? You may think that this is fairly normal when in actuality, frequent blushing is one of the biggest symptoms of rosacea.

If left untreated, rosacea can cause your skin to burn and become especially inflamed and irritated. If you have one or all of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with Dr. Gregory Wiener. During your initial appointment, you will be examined for not only rosacea but other skin conditions as well. Contact our office today to schedule an appointment!

dry lipsWhen you look at images of the most beautiful women in the world— Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, and Cate Blanchett to name a few— they all have a few things in common, one of them being naturally full lips. However, if you weren’t born with naturally plump lips, Dr. Gregory Wiener can help. By using a dermal filler like Juvederm or Restylane, Dr. Wiener will be able to add more volume to your lips and may even be able to shape them. To maintain your luscious lips. However, it’s important that you keep your lips smooth and moisturized— especially during this time of year. Read on to learn more.

They Can Hurt

Cracked, dry lips are not only unappealing to look at but they are also extremely uncomfortable and even painful. During this time of year, it’s easy for your body to get dehydrated and your lips to crack, peel, and even bleed. To keep your newly plump lips in the best shape possible, try using a hydrating lip balm that contains ingredients like beeswax, coconut oil, and even petroleum jelly.

You Paid for Them

You paid good money to have your lips done by Dr. Gregory Wiener and the less you take care of your lips, the worse they will look. To maintain your results and get the most out of your newly plumped pout, make sure that you are using a moisturizing lip balm at least a few times a day. In fact, we encourage our patients to apply a lip balm to their lips after every meal and directly before bed every night.

They Will Look Better

Nothing is quite as unattractive as applying lipstick to dry lips that are starting to peel. To make sure your lips look in the best shape possible all the time, keep them constantly moisturized. The more moisturized they are, the smoother your lipstick will go on— which means that you will look on top of your game.

Having dry, cracked lips is awful— especially when you just got them done. By keeping them moisturized, you can feel more comfortable, get the most out of your money, and look more attractive. To learn more about dermal fillers, contact Dr. Gregory Wiener today!

men plastic surgeryFrom fillers to facelifts, the field of aesthetic medicine has largely been supported by women. More recently, however, we are seeing an increased interest coming from the men’s side of the aisle. We applaud any person who makes a decision to improve something that has rocked their self-esteem, and enjoy seeing how open most people are today to discuss how they are staying young.

Botox

This cosmetic solution was not initially intended for the purpose it now fills. However, the purified protein has become renowned around the world for safely and quickly reducing troublesome concerns such as crow’s feet and frown lines. Like women, men whose foreheads and brows are marked with horizontal or vertical lines can look worried or angry. Softening these lines does not inhibit facial expression, and it can actually heighten face to face interaction!

Dermal Fillers

Volume loss is a real downer. Quite literally, the decrease in fatty and fluid substances beneath the skin can lead to a downward fall of facial skin. The jowls become heavy and loose, as do the eyelids. The cheeks flatten, and the jaw line can lose is masculine angles. Dermal fillers are formulated for just about every area of the face, and for mild to severe lines and folds. Reinstating more youthful contours  can be a big confidence booster.

Eyelid Surgery

The eyes are one of the first areas of the face to indicate age. Consequences of loose, sagging skin on either the upper or lower lids include the perception of anger or unfriendliness. A man with heavy eyes looks far more tired than he may feel, and this can affect his work relationships as well as his social interactions. An eyelid lift, called blepharoplasty, can be a great way to rejuvenate the entire face.

Liposuction

The older a man gets, the more he may struggle to maintain a slim, toned physique. This can be due to the natural decline in testosterone as well as a less active lifestyle. The areas that are often affected by unwanted fat are the flanks, or love handles, and the abdomen. Excess breast tissue may also become a disruptive problem. To make their time in the gym count, many men are turning to liposuction to complement their physical activity and healthy eating habits.

What good comes of procrastinating when it comes to feeling your best? Don’t wait. Contact our office to discuss your cosmetic concerns.

Winter is deemed as “the most wonderful time of the year” by many. However, by your skin, it is considered to be the harshest time of the year. Cold temperatures, dry air, and harsh wind can leave your skin looking red and feeling damaged like never before. In order to properly protect your skin this winter, try these three tips.gw1

1. Wear Sunscreen

It might sound ridiculous to most people but wearing sunscreen everyday— no matter if it’s snowing or sunny out— is crucial to keeping your skin safe from the sun’s harsh rays. Even by sitting in the car, you can get some sun damage to your skin that is exposed and not covered up by clothes. As a good rule, get into the habit of applying a moisturizer with an SPF in it every morning before you get out the door— that way you will never leave the house without feeling protected from the sun again.

2. Cover Up

Things like wind burn can cause your skin to feel raw and sensitive. If you live in a really windy area or if you are participating in snow sports on a windy day, make sure to cover up as much as possible. Try to wear a hat, gloves, a coat, pants, boots, and even a face mask in order to ensure that you don’t get wind burned  in any way.

3. Moisturize

Winter can cause your skin— your hands especially—- to get chapped and even bleed sometimes. In order to prevent this from happening, try to keep your skin moisturized throughout the winter season. Simply keep a small moisturizing lotion in your car or bag and apply a small amount to your hands after you wash them or just when you notice that they are starting to feel dry.

If your hands are especially chapped, try putting some vaseline on top of them. Vaseline is a great moisturizer and will help you to keep out any dryness that heads your way.

Full Body on WhiteIf you recently have undergone laser hair removal and want to show off your newly hair free skin, but are suffering from the dreaded dry skin, you are not alone. Although winter brings visions of sugar plum fairies, walks in a winter wonder land, and kissing under the mistletoe, winter also brings along dry air that can cause your skin to dry out and become chapped. If you have chronic dry skin, try following these tips in order to get your skin looking and feeling smoother again.

Exfoliate

Using a sugar or salt based exfoliating scrub is a great and natural way to rid your body of dead, dry skin that has built up. Simply apply on your arms, legs, abdomen, and anywhere else you are experiencing dry skin and rub it into your body for at least 30 seconds. Rinse off with warm water and voila! Your skin is now a little bit smoother.

Body Brushing

You brush your hair, you brush your teeth, but did you know that you can also brush your body? By using a specific body brush designed for your skin, you can help to get rid of dry skin and improve overall blood circulation. Simply brush your skin with the brush for 10-15 minutes a day and you will notice a difference in just a few days time.

Moisturize

If you forget to moisturize or are simply too lazy to do so, then you are basically asking for dry, damaged skin. By applying a thick moisturizing body lotion across your body you can help to lock in and seal moisture— helping to clear up your dry, chapped skin.

Nothing is more annoying during the holiday season than having to deal with dry, itchy skin. However, by exfoliating, using a body brush, and moisturizing your skin, you can help to lock in moisture and combat dry skin like never before.

beautiful young girl with a clean fresh skinWhether you’re in your late teens or your early 80’s it’s always important to take good care of your skin. Prevent dry itchy skin, and help to keep your skin looking young and rejuvenated longer by following these three skincare routines.

Wash Your Face

Whether you’re just too tired before bed or you constantly forget, washing your face before bed is a habit that if you haven’t gotten into yet, you should get into it now. By washing your face before bed, you are ridding your skin of bacteria, germs, and oil that have built up throughout the day. Plus, if you wear makeup, taking your makeup off before bed will help to eliminate things such as acne breakouts. Make sure that when you wash your face before bed that you are using a gentle facial cleanser in combination with something to help take off makeup like a makeup remover toner.

Wear Sunscreen

It doesnt’ matter if it’s in the dark of winter and you only spend 5 minutes outside every day— wearing sunscreen will not only help your skin stay younger looking longer but it will also protect you from skin cancer. When purchasing sunscreen for your face, try to buy a sunscreen that has at least an SPF 50 in it, that way you can get a large amount of coverage that isn’t too thick and noticeable. When applying your sunscreen, make sure you apply it in a thick layer. Sunscreen should go on a thick white and then you can slowly blend it in.

Moisturize

Another crucial part of any skincare routine is to moisturize your skin. Even if you’re trying to dry out a zit or two, moisturizing your skin will help to stabilize your skins production of oil to combat both oily and dry skin. Plus, moisturizing will also help to prevent your skin from drying and causing excess wrinkles.

No matter what age you are, following these three easy skincare steps will help your skin feel more comfortable and look better.
