Woman smiling and pointing to her nose after rhinoplasty in Chicago, ILIf you want to alter the size and shape of your nose to improve facial harmony, you’ve likely already considered rhinoplasty or a nose job. Whether correcting a breathing issue or refining your nose’s shape, proper preparation is essential for a smooth experience and optimal results. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get ready for your rhinoplasty surgery.

Dr. Gregory Wiener, a Chicago-based, board-certified plastic surgeon, understands that rhinoplasty is both a science and an art, requiring a personalized approach to achieve natural, harmonious results. With technical expertise and artistic vision, Dr. Wiener ensures each patient receives individualized care, guiding them through every step of the rhinoplasty process for a smooth experience and exceptional outcome.

Step 1: Schedule a Consultation

Your journey begins with a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Wiener. During this meeting, you’ll discuss your goals, medical history, and expected outcomes. Your surgeon will examine your nose, take photos, and create a personalized surgical plan.

Step 2: Follow Pre-Surgical Instructions

Your surgeon will provide detailed pre-operative guidelines. These typically include:

  • Avoid blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain supplements for at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Quit smoking since nicotine restricts blood flow and can hinder healing.
  • Limit alcohol consumption as it can increase swelling and bruising.

Step 3: Plan for Recovery Time

Rhinoplasty requires downtime, so arrange your schedule accordingly. Most patients need about one to two weeks off work or school. Prepare your home by stocking up on soft foods, comfortable pillows, and entertainment to help pass the time during recovery.

Step 4: Arrange Transportation and Assistance

Since rhinoplasty is performed under anesthesia, you’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Having a reliable friend or family member help with daily tasks will make the initial recovery phase more manageable.

Step 5: Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Eating a nutrient-rich diet and staying hydrated will support healing. Prioritize foods rich in vitamins C and A, which promote tissue repair. Additionally, get plenty of rest to strengthen your immune system.

Step 6: Mentally Prepare for Your Transformation

It takes time for post-surgical swelling to subside, and final results may take months to appear. Setting realistic expectations and trusting the process will help you stay patient and positive throughout your recovery.

There are many reasons why someone would want to have nose surgery, or rhinoplasty. Often, it’s because of the appearance of the nose, but also it is a matter of function.

Here are eight things you should know about nose surgery and whether you are a candidate for this popular procedure:

  1. Aesthetics are the most common reason why someone considers a nose surgery. Some of the most common concerns: the nose is out of proportion with the rest of the face, the tip is too bulbous or it droops, the nose is crooked, there is a bump or depressions on the bridge, the nostrils are too flared or the sidewalls are depressed.
  2. Injury to the face may lead some patients to seek nose surgery. Taking a ball, bat or hockey stick to the nose may lead to a crooked or misshapen nose.
  3. If you have functional problems such as restricted or blocked nasal passages, then you may be experiencing impaired sleep and a reduced quality of life. Nose surgery can improve airflow and quality of life, all while improving aesthetics at the same time.
  4. Surgery won’t be performed until the patient is finished with facial growth. For girls, this may be around age 15 or 16; for boys, this is usually at least age 17.
  5. After surgery, most swelling resolves within two to three weeks. Patients may experience some swelling for several months.
  6. Most patients can return to work within seven to 10 days after the splint and sutures have been removed. Light activities can resume three to four weeks after surgery, but you should avoid strenuous activities for six weeks.
  7. While you will see results improve each day after surgery, the final surgery results may take six months to a year.
  8. Some patients have come to our office for a revision or secondary rhinoplasty to correct bad results from previous nose surgeries. Dr. Wiener is experienced in revision surgery and can correct bad nose surgeries done elsewhere.

woman-in-stripesMichael Jackson did it, Lil Kim did it, and so have a lot of other high-profile celebrities since then. Botched nose jobs or rhinoplasties, certainly aren’t a thing of the past. By getting nose jobs done that look nothing like a natural nose but more like a Who’s nose from Dr. Seuss’s Whoville, some plastic surgeons are ruining the art of rhinoplasty. If you are considering getting your nose done but are worried that your results will make you look more like Michael Jackson post surgery then consider the following tips to help you choose the right nose for your face. Read on to learn more.

  1. Problem Areas

The first step in identifying what kind of nose you want is to look at the problem areas you have with your current nose. Is it too wide? Is it too pronounced? Do you have a large bump on the top of it? Point out to your surgeon what you would like to have fixed and why. This will help your doctor determine what the final outcome should look like.

  1. Your Face Shape

The problem with celebrities like Michael Jackson and Lil Kim’s nose jobs is that their noses were simply far too small for their face. When considering what kind of nose is suitable for your face, you need to make sure that you pick one that matches your face shape and face size— that way it won’t look disproportionate. For instance, if you have a larger, rounder face with fairly pronounced features, you shouldn’t reduce the size of your nose too much because it will simply look out of place.

  1. Look At Others

Another more obvious way to choose a nose is to look through pictures of noses and choose which ones you are more attracted to. Your surgeon might have you thumb through pictures of past patients in order to pinpoint what look you are going for. Then, your surgeon can try to replicate that same nose shape in a way that is still unique to you and your face structure.

Nothing makes the world of plastic surgery look quite as awful as a botched nose job. If you are considering getting a rhinoplasty but have a little bit of ambivalence about the whole thing, make sure you follow the above steps in order to get the right, natural looking results.
